Overview

There are approximately 2.75 million Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) in Malaysia, constituting about 9% of Malaysia’s population. About 2 million Malaysian Indians speak Tamil language. A sizeable number of PIOs speak Telugu, Malayalam and Punjabi language. There are also smaller numbers of Gujarati, Bengali and Urdu speaking PIOs.

It is estimated that about 2,25,000 Indian expatriates, both skilled and unskilled, are living in Malaysia. The skilled expatriates coming to Malaysia are mostly IT professionals, engineers, doctors etc. More than 65 different community associations are registered with the High Commission of India. The Indian Diaspora in Malaysia is very active on the socio-cultural landscape of Malaysia. They are actively participating in various activities and flagship events of the Mission.
